Home, homeliness and sense of home
A home offer should feel like a home
Health and welfare
A familiar environment with a good support system is particularly important for vulnerable people and people with disabilities. It helps reduce stress, reduce isolation and create strong relationships — factors that together form a solid foundation for a happy and independent life.

Challenge

In Kolding Municipality, we have a clear vision for our housing and support services in the area of social and disability: to ensure that every resident has a good and safe home, where they can build a sense of homeliness and well-being. But what adjustments and changes are needed to realize the vision?

Process and solution

In the design process, we carried out extensive fieldwork to gain a deeper understanding of the issue. Together with citizens, employees and relatives, we focused on how to experience feeling “at home” in the municipality's housing and support services. Here we worked with concepts such as home, homeliness and sense of home to explore the many ideas, feelings and understandings related to home.

The insights from the fieldwork revealed seven key areas of focus, including “The Beautiful Surroundings”, “The Good Everyday” and “The Great Community”. These areas also contain concrete measures that can strengthen the experience of a good and safe home. For example, an improved entrance hall, hallway or common room can make a big difference for users of the municipality's housing and support services, making them feel more at home.

Results

In order to promote a long-term cultural change in the field of social and disability, and to integrate the importance of home, homeliness and sense of home into our mindset and daily life, we have launched several different actions:

  • Training for Homeliness Ambassadors
These help to initiate initiatives on all housing and support services and ensure that they are adapted to each place.
  • Publication of a catalogue of ideas
The catalogue has been developed by teaching students at UC Syd and contains professional knowledge and concrete proposals for actions that can be implemented through the municipality's housing and support offer.
  • Workshops and materials
We offer workshops and workshop materials that help educators focus on creating a sense of home through sensory impressions. The material was developed by students from Kolding School of Design.

Derived effects

One of the positive derivative effects of the project is the improved job satisfaction among employees. The figures point, among other things, to:

  • Greater job satisfaction
  • Decrease in sick leave
  • Better retention of employees
